CBSE Board Exams: 70% Delhi Students, 50% Across India Opt For Basic Maths

The Class X Exam Schedule Is Set To Be Announced Soon

New Delhi: Over 50 per cent of class 10 CBSE students from across the country and 70 per cent from Delhi government schools, who would be sitting for the board exams next year, have opted for ‘basic mathematics’.

The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) had earlier this year announced a major reform in the board exams, giving students an option to either opt for the easier ‘Mathematics-Basic’ or the ‘Mathematics-Standard’ paper. Students who opt for the basic paper will not be able to take up the subject anymore in higher studies.

News agency PTI has reported that an overwhelming 70 per cent of the students in Delhi government schools have opted for the ‘Mathematics-Basic’ paper. The exam schedule is expected to be announced soon.

Media reports have also reported that more than 50 per cent of the students from across the country have opted for the easier paper. This includes those who are good at the subject.

The board has already released sample question papers of both Math-basic and Math-standard to help students in their preparations.

Reactions were mixed in the teaching fraternity. While some teachers said the trend is a reflection of the growing inclination to score more mark, the other section appeared worried as the trend also indicated that the students are not “ready to try”.
