UGC Chides Institutes Over Laxity In Enforcing Anti-Ragging Measures!

The commission issues helpline number for the benefit of the victims

The University Grants Commission (UGC) has once again asked higher educational institutes across the country to strictly enforce the anti-ragging measures as the menace is continuing to hamper the academic environment.

The commission, in a communication to all state chief secretaries and education secretaries, said the institutes need to mandatorily follow the ‘UGC Regulations on Curbing The Menace of Ragging in Higher Educational Institutions, 2009’, which were notified on June 17, 2019.

It said that while the institutes have been advised time and again to implement the provisions in letter and spirit, “we are yet to completely eliminate the menace of ragging. This is adversely affecting the higher education system of the country”.

It said a nationwide toll-free anti-ragging helpline – 1800-180-5522 in 12 languages has also been established which can be accessed by students in distress due to ragging.

“I, therefore, request you to take strong measures to implement the Anti-Ragging Regulations in your State and take stringent action against those flouting the guidelines,” the commission’s secretary Prof Rajnish Jain said in its communication to the state administrative heads.

“Once again, may I request for your kind intervention in the matter to ensure that the concern is addressed in a time-bound manner and your State becomes a ‘Ragging Free State’, in the earliest,” it further read.

The Anti-Ragging Regulations are available on the UGC website: www.ugc.ac.in
