New Delhi: A petition has been filed by a 12-year-old student in the Supreme Court asking for orders to resume physical classes. The student cited the mental health of many like him and mid-day meal access as reasons for this desperate plea.
“You tell this young child to concentrate on his studies and not file these petitions. He has sought orders to reopen physical classes and create guidelines for offline classes. I’m not saying this is a publicity petition, but children should not be involved in this,” Justice Y Chandrachud said while responding to the petition.
He further added, “Can we say that the situation in Kerala is the same as Maharashtra or that Delhi is same as Bengal? We cannot pass judicial order to send kids back to school. We have just come out of the second wave. There are fears of a third wave, we don’t know if it will be as devastating.”
“We cannot pass orders in the absence of data and scientific knowledge. We saw what happened across the world when schools were reopened at an early stage. Children have not been vaccinated yet” He allowed the petitioner to withdraw the plea and said that a representation could be filed with the state or local authorities as the petitioner lived in Delhi,” Justice Chandrachud added.
