UGC Recommends Use Of Khadi As Ceremonial Dress
New Delhi: The quintessential western robe, which is so intrinsic to a convocation ceremony, may soon be a thing of the past.
The UGC has asked both public and private universities to consider using khadi or other handlooms as ceremonial dresses.
In a communication to all universities on Thursday, it has said that the use of Khadi or other handlooms will not only give a sense of pride of being an Indian, but it will also be more comfortable for students in hot and humid conditions.
The communication has strongly advocated the revival of khadi, which became a veritable weapon for the citizens during the freedom struggle.
“I request you to kindly take appropriate action to adopt khadi and handloom fabric for ceremonial dresses to encourage the use of khadi and also khadi kattins (spinners) and bunkers (weavers),” the communication sent by UGC official Rajnish Jain to the universities said.
However, this is not the first time, the commission has made the recommendation. Earlier in June, it had asked the universities to go traditional.
While some universities have already done away with the practice, considered a British legacy, a larger number of institutes in the country still follow the black robe. The commission had suggested the states to follow a more traditional attire that gels with the customs of the particular place.
