Bhubaneswar: Officially declared as the ‘Institutes of National Importance’, the Indian Institute of Technology (IITs) are autonomous institutes since 1961. The IITs are governed by the Institutes of Technology Act, 1961.
The Human Resource Development Minister, Prakash Javadekar is the ex-officio Chairperson of the IIT Council. A total of 23 IITs are operating across the country and provides nearly 11 thousand seats to the meritorious engineering aspirants.
Education Bytes takes a look at the top five IITs among the 23.
Established in 1959 by the Government of India with assistance from the Government of West Germany, the iconic institute was set up in Madras (now Chennai). Going by the NIRF Rankings, IIT-Madras, with 550 faculty members, has been ranked as the best engineering institute in the country for three successive years.
IIT-Delhi was established at Hauz Khas, Delhi in 1961. It started as the College of Engineering and Technology but later the institute was named the IIT in 1963. This renowned institute has a beautiful campus surrounded by monuments like Qutub Minar and Lotus temple. The IIT-Delhi hostels are named after India’s mountain ranges. The institute is ranked second as per NIRF rankings.
Established in 1958, IIT-Bombay is the country’s second-oldest IIT and is located in Mumbai’s Powai region. The institute offers comprehensive graduate courses presenting doctoral degrees in science, technology, engineering and mathematics. IIT-Bombay has 17 academic departments along with 13 multi-disciplinary centres and three schools of excellence. It is ranked third among the IITs across the country.
IIT-Kanpur was set up in 1959 as part of the Kanpur Indo-American Programme, including the assistance of a consortium of nine US Research Universities. The IIT-Kanpur library has a collection of over 3 lakh books and journals and almost 4500 books and journals are further added every year. Being a public research institute, IIT-Kanpur is engaged in many social and public utility projects. It is ranked fourth according to NIRF rankings.
IIT-Kharagpur, which was established in West Bengal’s Kharagpur in 1951, is the oldest IIT in the country. The institute boasts of 19 academic departments along with eight multi-disciplinary centres, 13 schools of excellence and 25 central research units. The IIT-Kharagpur library is one of the biggest libraries of India with around 3,50,000 books, documents and research papers. The hallowed institute organises two festivals annually — the Spring Fest and Kshitij Fest.
