Ambedkar University Slaps Fine On Student For ‘Derogatory’ Remarks Against Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal

New Delhi: A final year Ambedkar University student has been fined Rs 5,000 for allegedly making “distasteful remarks” online against Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal in an annual convocation that took place in December 2020.

The convocation ceremony of the university was conducted on December 23 with the Delhi CM as the chief guest. The university said in a statement that people had joined its ninth convocation on YouTube. The student started disrupting it using the YouTube chat room during the programme, the statement said.

“The comments made by the student were derogatory/slur/distasteful. The convocation is the most auspicious programme in the academic cycle of any student. The conduct… was unbecoming of a student and was against the values for which Dr B R Ambedkar University stands. The action was taken as the conduct of the student was in violation of the code of discipline prescribed and notified for the students of AUD,” read the statement.

The All India Students’ Association (AISA), backed by the Left parties, said the student has been fined Rs 5,000 for an “online protest against the university’s fee hike and discrepancies in the implementation of the reservation policy.”

A sub-committee was formed by the proctorial board of the university to look into the matter.
