HYDERABAD: The Ministry of Education of Government of India will announce the ninth edition of the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) 2024 on August 12.

Five parameters

The NIRF evaluates the institutions in India on the basis of five broad parameters —teaching, learning and resources; research and professional practice; graduation outcomes, outreach and inclusivity; and perception.

Categories of institutions

The higher educational institutes are covered in 13 categories — overall, universities, medical, engineering, management, law, architecture, colleges, research institutions, pharmacy, dental, agriculture and allied sectors, and innovation.

In total 5,543 higher education institutions participated in the NIRF in 2023.

Last year’s rankings

The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Madras continued to be in the top of the list of engineering colleges for the fifth consecutive year.

The All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), Delhi secured the top rank in the list of medical colleges last year, followed by Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research in Chandigarh, Christian Medical College, Vellore and National Institute of Mental Health & Neuro Sciences (NIMHANS), Bengaluru.

The Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bengaluru, was adjudged as the best university in India. The Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) and Jamia Millia Islamia bagged the second and third sports respectively.

In the ‘Research’ institutions category, the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bengaluru, topped the list, followed by IIT, Madras and IIT Delhi.

The IIT-Madras has also been ranked as the best engineering college for the past eight years. In the category of management institutions, the Indian Institute of Management (IIM), Ahmedabad, Bangalore and Calcutta campuses have been in the top five spots.
