HYDERABAD: Following the order of the Supreme Court, the Karnataka government has decided to not declare the results of board examinations held for 8th, 9th and 10th classes till further orders.

The decision comes after the Supreme Court on October 21 pulled up the Karnataka government for “harassing” students by conducting board exams for different classes.

The apex court restrained the Karnataka government from declaring results of board examinations of classes 8, 9 and 10 till further orders.

“Why are you harassing the students? You are the state. You should not behave like this. Don’t make it an ego issue. If you are really concerned about the welfare of students, then please open good schools. Don’t throttle them,” a Bench of Justices Bela M Trivedi and Satish Chandra Sharma told senior advocate Devadatt Kamat who appeared for the Karnataka government.

Circular withdrawn

Kamat informed the apex court that the state government has withdrawn a circular for conducting board examinations for students of classes 5, 8, 9 and 10 in seven rural districts.

School Education Minister Madhu Bangarappa recently had made an official announcement about the cancellation of board examinations for classes 5, 8, 9 and 11, following the apex court’s order in April that the examinations were against the Right to Education Act.

Summative assessment

Now, students of classes 5, 8, and 9 will be assessed through Summative Assessment-2 (SA-2), while class 11 students will write their annual examination, Bangarappa said.

“Previously, we introduced several examination reforms, such as implementing web streaming for SSLC and II PUC exams. To reduce the fear and anxiety surrounding board exams, we took measures to introduce board exams for classes 5, 8, 9, and 11. The matter is currently under consideration by the Supreme Court, and we will fully comply with whatever final ruling is delivered,” Bangarappa had said earlier.
