IIM Sambalpur Quits CAP, Independent Admissions To Be Done From 2025-26 Academic Year

The new admission process by IIM Sambalpur will ensure holistic admissions experience by directly interacting with the candidates

NEW DELHI: In a major shift in its admission process, the Indian Institute of Management (IIM), Sambalpur has announced that it will quit the Common Admission Process (CAP) from the 2025-26 academic year and independently conduct the process for its flagship MBA Programme.

The admission to the newly launched MBA programme in Business Analytics, which offers an option for a dual degree from an international institute, will also be done

The new admission process will encourage a more holistic admissions experience through directly interacting with the candidates. The process will include a flexible option to participate in personal interviews in either in person or virtual mode, the institute said.

IIM Sambalpur will ensure admissions based on merit by using an aggregate of CAT 2024 scores, academic records, experience at work, and gender balance.

“Now, with over 50 faculty members, we can handle admissions ourselves. In CAP, interviews were conducted for a few IIMs simultaneously, which led to less clarity and focus on institutional needs,” media reports quoted IIM-Sambalpur Director Prof Mahadeo Jaiswal as saying.

“By moving away from CAP, we can adopt a profile-based selection approach where we consider candidates’ academic performance, relevant work experience, and additional credentials. This enables us to evaluate applicants holistically,” he explained.

Major takeaways from new admission process

  • Candidates can opt for interviews in online mode or in person at the IIM Sambalpur campus or at its Delhi campus.
  • The same admission process would be followed for the flagship MBA and the new MBA (BA) programmes.
  • The direct, individualised interactions are conducted between IIM Sambalpur and prospective students will ensure better assessment.
