Telangana accounted for 34% of Indian student visas, while Andhra Pradesh bagged 22%, suggests data released by the US Consulate General.

HYDERABAD: Students from Andhra Pradesh and Telangana accounted for 56% of the total students’ visa issued to the Indian students by the United States of America in 2023, suggests the data released by the US Consulate General.

These figures tell it all about the growing prominence of these two states in contributing to India’s global education scenario.

Chief of the US Consulate General in Hyderabad, Rebekah Drame and public affairs officer of the consulate Alexander McLaren shared the data at a media conference in Visakhapatnam on November 19.

Of the total 54% of the visa issued to Indian students in 2023, Telangana accounted for 34% of Indian student visas, while Andhra Pradesh bagged 22%, they said.

Rebekah Drame pointed out a significant growth in visa processing. Over 47,000 student visa interviews were held in 2023, a 25% rise from the previous year’s 35,000 interviews.

STEM disciplines

Andhra Pradesh and Telangana have been boasting of their robust educational infrastructure, particularly in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM), apart from some of the country’s prominent coaching institutes that prepare students for international admissions and tests such as GRE and TOEFL.

Further, the increasing popularity of the universities in the USA as the global education hubs and the potential for better job prospects after degrees have made the US among the most preferred destinations for the students from Andhra Pradesh and Telangana.

Students from these states usually pursue master’s degrees in STEM disciplines, including computer science, data science, and engineering.

Global job market

The demand for these skills in the global job market aligns well with the focus of universities in the US, which continue to attract Indian talent in these areas.
