Kolkata: The West Bengal cabinet has approved an in‑principle decision to shut down 250 government‑recognised private madrasas across the state, citing low student enrolment and poor infrastructure.
According to education department officials, these institutions will continue classes until December 2026 to allow currently enrolled students to complete their academic commitments. Thereafter, the government will initiate closure proceedings based on administrative reports submitted by the madrasas.
Officials confirmed that reports from the identified madrasas are expected before Durga Puja, after which the administration will take further steps.
A recent state‑wide survey flagged concerns over approvals, infrastructure and enrolment.
Earlier, the government ordered the closure of 252 unauthorised madrasas and issued show‑cause notices to 100 others.

The state government is also considering a phased closure of nearly 2,500 unregistered madrasas operating across West Bengal. In addition, the cabinet has approved issuing fresh show‑cause notices to another 100 madrasas over alleged irregularities.
