British Council, the United Kingdom’s international organisation for educational opportunities and cultural relations, has brought it’s coveted global programme – ‘Crafting Futures: India- UK Collaboration Scheme’, to India.
Crafting Futures supports the future of crafts globally. This scheme is aligned to the Indian government’s agenda of supporting local artisans and giving them global exposure along with the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals of education and training to develop skills, entrepreneurship and improve the creative quality of crafts.
Applications are now open for project proposals from India and the UK.
Submission is open to organisations across textiles, jewellery, sustainable fashion, handicrafts, furniture, pottery and more.
The British Council will awards grants of UK Pound 10,000 or UK Pound 20,000, depending on the application and project proposals. Six winning organisations will be chosen and will benefit from technical and monetary support from various global partners.
The grants are designed to provide Indian and UK organisations with the opportunity to design and deliver a 12-14 months ambitious and creative project which develops and strengthens crafts sector in India.
The Scheme supports projects that fall under one or more of the following themes:
• What are new ecosystems for craft? How can traditional skills, contemporary design and enterprise come together to create new systems?
• How can crafts be a route to women empowerment and leadership?
• How can craft address global environmental challenges?
• How can craft tourism ensure craft is widely appreciated?
• What possibilities does digital technology bring to craft? The projects will need to take place between January 2020 and March 2021. Eligibility criteria: • Each application must be jointly submitted and have a Primary Applicant based in India and a secondary applicant based in the UK.
• Applications must come from Organisations and not individuals.
• Projects must take place in India
Organisations eligible to apply for the Scheme:
• Crafts organisations, associations, cooperatives and unions of artisans
• Organisations which work with designers, craftspeople and artisans, including
• NGOs
• Universities, educational institutes and technical or vocational schools with art or design specialisations
• Museums or other cultural heritage bodies which present craft works
• Media platforms (traditional and or/ digital) who feature craft and design.
