Indian professionals already employed in Canada, particularly in high-demand sectors such as information technology, engineering and healthcare, could see their chances of securing permanent residency improve significantly under Canada’s revamped immigration rules.
The changes to the Express Entry system, announced by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC), which were announced earlier this month, will come into effect on 3 November, shifting the focus towards candidates with Canadian work experience and high-paying job offers.
As Indians consistently form one of the largest groups of applicants invited to apply for permanent residence through Express Entry, the revised framework is expected to favour thousands of skilled workers already contributing to the Canadian economy.
Bigger Advantage for Indians with Canadian Work Experience
The new rules place greater value on professionals who have gained experience within Canada. This is likely to benefit Indian software engineers, IT specialists, healthcare workers, technicians and engineers who are already employed in the country.
Candidates with qualifying Canadian work experience in designated high-wage occupations will be eligible for up to 70 additional points under the Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS), which determines rankings for permanent residence invitations.
The higher a profession’s wage level, the greater the points awarded. Occupations whose national median wage is at least twice the overall Canadian median wage will attract the maximum bonus.
For Indian professionals already established in Canada’s workforce, these additional points could substantially strengthen their competitiveness in future Express Entry draws.
High-Paying Job Offers to Carry More Weight
Another major benefit for Indian workers is the increased importance of qualifying job offers.
Under the revised system, candidates can receive up to 100 additional CRS points for a valid job offer in an eligible high-wage occupation. The award will vary depending on the salary level attached to the occupation.
However, applicants can claim either points for qualifying Canadian work experience or a high-wage job offer, whichever provides the greater advantage. Both benefits cannot be combined.
The move is expected to reward professionals who have successfully integrated into the Canadian labour market and secured skilled employment.
The sectors likely to benefit from the revised rules cover several occupations across software engineering and information technology, healthcare and medical services, engineering disciplines, education, skilled trades.
These sectors employ a large number of Indian professionals, making the changes particularly relevant for the Indian diaspora in Canada.
LMIA Requirement Removed
In a significant simplification, Canada has removed the requirement for a Labour Market Impact Assessment (LMIA) for qualifying job offers to earn CRS points.
The change is expected to reduce paperwork and make it easier for eligible candidates to benefit from employment-based points under Express Entry.
Aim to Attract Skilled Talent
Canadian Immigration Minister Lena Metlege Diab said the reforms are designed to select skilled newcomers who are best positioned to succeed in Canada, complement the domestic workforce and contribute to economic growth.
For thousands of Indian professionals already living and working in Canada, the new framework could provide a clearer and potentially faster pathway to permanent residency.
