CBSE Announces News Syllabus For Classes 10 And 12, Check The Details

The CBSE has introduced a 9-point grading system, where marks will be converted into grades.

NEW DELHI: The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has introduced key changes to its syllabus for Classes 10 and 12.

The changes aim to enhance the academic framework and expanding skill-based learning opportunities.

For Class 10 students, the CBSE has made mandatory the selection of one of three skill-based subjects—Computer Applications, Information Technology, or Artificial Intelligence. Moreover, the students have to choose either English or Hindi as one of their language subjects, which they can opt in either Class 9 or 10.

In a notice, the CBSE has announced the new curriculum for secondary and senior secondary classes.

“The curriculum provides comprehensive guidelines on academic content, syllabus for examinations, learning outcomes, recommended pedagogical practices, and assessment frameworks for classes IX to XII,” said the CBSE notification.

Subjects should be taught in alignment with the prescribed syllabus, integrating experiential learning, competency-based assessments, and interdisciplinary approaches to enhance students’ conceptual understanding and application, it said.

If a student fails in core subjects such as science, mathematics, social science, or a language paper, they can substitute it with a passed skill subject or an optional language subject for calculation of the final results.

The CBSE has introduced new additions to the curriculum for the Class 12 students.

Four new skill-based electives —Land Transportation Associate, Electronics and Hardware, Physical Activity Trainer, and Design Thinking and Innovation— have been introduced. This change aims at aligning with the growing need for practical and vocational skills among the students.

The revised Class 12 syllabus covers seven major learning areas—languages, humanities, mathematics, sciences, skill subjects, general studies, and health and physical education.

Grading criteria

Meanwhile, the CBSE has also introduced changes in the grading criteria for both Class 10 and 12 board examinations. A 9-point grading system has been introduced as part of which marks will be converted into grades.

Examination

In terms of examination, Class 10 students now have to appear for board exams twice a year, scheduled for February and April, beginning this academic year.

The Class 12 examinations will continue to be held annually.

“Emphasis should be placed on project-based learning, inquiry-driven approaches, and technology-enabled education to make learning more engaging and meaningful. Schools should also prioritize collaborative lesson planning to ensure that teaching strategies remain dynamic, inclusive, and future-ready,” the notification said.

To make effective use of the curriculum, schools are advised to implement contextualised and flexible teaching methodologies that cater to diverse learning needs in accordance to the recommendations made in the National Curriculum Framework-2023, it added.
