More than 50 per cent of the students have opted for basic Mathematics in class X CBSE board examinations 2020.
The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) had earlier this year announced a major reform in the board exams, giving students an option to either opt for the easier ‘Mathematics-Basic’ or the ‘Mathematics-Standard’ paper. Students who opt for the basic paper will not be able to take up the subject anymore in higher studies.
Students, however, have registered in droves for the basic paper, news reports said, quoting multiple teachers in Delhi and other schools in the country.
While CBSE has not come out yet with the exact figures after the end of the registration process for the board exams, many schools have reported that over 50 per cent has chosen to go with the basic maths paper in the board exams. This also includes students who are good at the subject.
Times Now quoted a Delhi school teacher who said the trend was a reflection of the growing inclination among students to score more marks. They have decided to go with the simpler version of the Maths paper to score a “ton” in the board exams.
Some teachers seemed worried about the trend. “I am not against the idea of providing students with the power of choice. What worries me, however, is the increased number of students opting out of the subject. As a teacher I see students choosing not to try…that is the worrying bit!” a teacher was quoted as saying.
The schedule for the class X board exams is slated to be announced soon. Indications are that the exam could begin in the last week of February and end in mid-March.
The board has already released sample question papers of both Math-basic and Math-standard to help students in their preparations.
