CBSE Planning On Replacing Words Like ‘Failed’,‘Compartmental’ From Board Marksheets

New Delhi: The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE), taking into consideration the huge amount of pressure and stress that students go through when their performances are not up to the mark, is planning to remove words such as ‘Failed’ and ‘Compartmental’ in the CBSE Board Exam 2020 marksheets.

CBSE has taken this decision as an effort to minimize the effect of poor result on the psyche and mental condition of students. Removing words like ‘compartmental’ and ‘failed’ may virtually help students to recover from failure and motivate them to do well in future.

According to media reports, the Board is in discussion with schools and have asked them to find substitute words or replacement words for ‘failed’ or ‘compartmental’ for the Board Exam 2020 marksheets.

“The word ‘failed’ has negative connotations, and in a marksheet, can have adverse implications. No student should be declared ‘failed’ since it does not denote his/her future prospects,” said Sanyam Bhardwaj, controller of examinations, CBSE, which has been engaging in stress reduction strategies by opening helpline counselling and getting former students to boost the confidence of the students appearing for the board exams.

“To counter the use of such negative terminology, we have constituted a committee which would take into account the feedback of stakeholders, comprising school principals across the country and educationists who have been asked to provide alternative terms to help lessen the burden on students’ minds,” added Bharadwaj.

Should the reform come through, CBSE may implement its plans in 2020 itself, he informed.
