Delhi University To Collaborate With Institutions From Outside Union Territory; Know Why

New Delhi: In an effort to step up research work and enhance the teaching skills, the Delhi University (DU) is contemplating collaborations with institutes outside the geographical boundary of the Union Territory.

Under the Vidya Vistar (V2) scheme, the university’s faculties, libraries and other facilities at its departments and colleges will be thrown open to collaborating institutions for academic cooperation, reported The Telegraph.

According to DU, activities like online and offline lectures, workshops, trainings and meetings would be conducted under the V2 scheme to enhance the skills of teachers of both DU and the partner institutions.

Collaboration plans are already underway in several DU colleges. PGDAV (Evening) College, affiliated to DU, will partner with Government College, Sheo (Barmer) in Rajasthan; Janki Devi Memorial College is clubbed with Mahatma Gandhi Government College in Andaman; Daulat Ram College will collaborate with Government College, Chouthan, in Rajasthan and Government College, Jodhpur.

However, some teachers of the university raised objection to the arrangement. They stood their ground saying the university had inadequate infrastructure and other pressing issues to deal with, which also include the regularisation of ad hoc teachers.

According to former DU Executive Council member Rajesh Jha, the collaboration plans should have first been discussed with the statutory bodies of DU, such as the Academic Council and the Executive Council.

“DU has 4,500 ad hoc teachers. They are not being regularised. Its own facilities such as classrooms, labs and hostels are inadequate. These problems are not being addressed. The scheme appears to be an attempt to say, ‘Look, we are sitting in Delhi and we know the best. We have the knowhow to improve you’,” Jha was quoted as saying by The Telegraph.
