Chief Minister of Delhi Arvind Kejriwal has said that Abhijit Banerjee, the Nobel Prize winner for Economics, was the inspiration behind the Delhi Government’s Education Reform Scheme “Chunauti” to put a check on dropout rate of the students.
“Abhijit Banerjee’s pathbreaking work has also benefited lakhs of children studying in Delhi Government Schools. One of Delhi govt’s most important education reform ‘Chunauti’ has transformed classroom teaching in govt schools. It is based on the model developed by him. His work on poverty alleviation gets the highest endorsement,” said the CM in a series of tweets.
“Chunauti” was first introduced in 2016 to check dropout of students and improve education quality with special focus on the weakest students.
The AAP government also announced a subsequent version of the scheme “Chunauti 2018”, under which students are mapped and the weakest among them are given “special focus” to enhance their learning levels from Class 6-8.
What is the “Chunauti” Scheme?
The scheme aims to improve learning levels in government schools. The plan divides children into groups on the basis of who can read and write Hindi and English and solve mathematical problems.
The division was done based on a baseline assessment of the students.
The ones who can read are called “Pratibha” and the ones who cannot read, are “Nishtha”. In class-9 there is another group called “Vishwas” which includes those who are out of school and have failed twice in the class.
And based on the classifications, students are given special classes at Govt and MCD schools.
