Education Minister Tables Bill To Establish University In Ladakh

New Delhi: Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan tabled a bill in Lok Sabha on Thursday that seeks to amend the Central Universities Act, 2009 in order to establish a university in the Union Territory of Ladakh.

According to the Statement of Objects and Reasons of the bill, there is no central university in Ladakh at present and therefore the government has decided to establish a new central university there to ensure increase in accessibility and quality of higher education. The proposed university will also facilitate and promote avenues of higher education and research for the people of Ladakh, it added.

Howevrer, opposition members created a din after Pradhan introduced the Central Universities (Amendment) Bill, 2021.

Opposing the introduction of the bill, Congress MP Manish Tewari said there is a time-honoured convention of the Parliament that till the time the House is not in order no legislation can be discussed.

“What is happening is completely unconstitutional, it is murder of democracy,” he said.
