Bhopal: Academicians from across the country are set to assemble here on October 30 and 31 to discuss the possibility of implementing the STEAM model of education in the country. Madhya Pradesh government has already announced its implementation, making it the first state in the country to doing so.
But before we go any further, let us understand what is this model that is catching the fancy of the academic world.
STEAM stands for Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics. The model integrates Arts into the Science stream. The curriculum is taught in an interdisciplinary and applied approach. Experts are of the view that the curriculum will not only raise the critical thinking and problem-solving abilities, but will also open before students a wide range of academic opportunities to explore.
Benefits of the STEAM model:
Exposes students to the creative process
Show the students a unique way to value the arts
Increases critical thinking
Provides a unique way to solve problems
Gives students a hands-on learning experience
Encourage girls to explore science, technology, engineering and mathematics
The Bhopal meet:
Educationists working in the STEAM model from USA, South Korea and other countries, besides professors from several states will gather at the meet to make the school principles and teachers learn about the model.
“The objective is to make the teaching fraternity aware of the model because the scope is immense. There would be teachers both from government and private schools,” an official of the MP education department was quoted as saying.
STEAM is an extension of the STEM model of education which is now widely accepted in India and elsewhere. According to some study, there will be more than 3 million job openings in STEM-related fields in coming times.
