Pune: The long-drawn fight between the parents and private school authorities is likely to end soon in Maharashtra. The state is contemplating an ordinance by the next month which will empower the officials to intervene in such conflicts.
“A file has been put up to see what changes can be made and we may take the ordinance route for now. It may come up in the next cabinet meet itself,” Maharashtra school education minister Varsha Gaikwad was quoted as saying by The Times of India. This will be done under the Maharashtra Educational Institutions (Regulation of Fee) Act.
Fingers have been pointed at the current opposition party about why the BJP-led government, which passed the law in 2018, did not solve the fees issue. The then school education minister Vinod Tawde clarified that it would have been legally untenable.
“There was no provision through which private school fees can be dictated by the state,” Tawde told the national daily.
Whether the proposed ordinance will empower the government to cap fees or waive it was not disclosed by Gaikwad.
Meanwhile, deputy chief minister Ajit Pawar said in Pune that a meeting will be held under the education department to resolve the issue on Monday.
