Four Indian-Americans Selected As Rhodes Scholars From US
New Delhi: Four Indian-Americans on Sunday were chosen among 32 others to represent the US as Rhodes Scholars virtually, who will go to Oxford next year to study in various fields, reported Hindustan Times.
The four candidates mentioned in the list, announced by Elliot Gerson, American Secretary of the Rhodes Trust, are Swathi R Srinivasan, Savarni Sanka, Vijayasundaram Ramasamy, and Garima P Desai.
Hailing the 32 students as “leaders” and expressing confidence in their future “contributions to public welfare globally”, Gerson also remarked that this year’s list of candidates showcased the “remarkable diversity that characterises and strengthens the United States.”
“Out of the 32 students, 22 are of colour; 10 are Black, equal to the greatest number ever elected in one year in the United States, nine are first-generation Americans or immigrants and one is a Dreamer with active Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) status. Seventeen of the winners are women, 14 are men, and one is non-binary,” he said.
“A Rhodes Scholar should show great promise of leadership. In short, we seek outstanding young people of intellect, character, leadership and commitment to service,” Gerson added.
The chosen scholars from the US will join other international scholars from more than 60 countries including Canada, India, Australia, Germany, China, Hong Kong and others.
