GATE 2020: Patna Farmer’s Son Bags Top Rank
Patna: Abhash Rai, a fourth year BTech student of National Institute of Technology (NIT), Patna, is the national topper in the Electrical Engineering stream of the Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) examinations.
Abhash has scored 87.33 marks out of 100, as per the results declared by IIT Delhi on Friday.
Abhash’s father, Upendra Nath Rai, is a farmer and his mother, Saroj Rai, is a homemaker.
The 22-year-old youth, who topped in his stream in the first attempt, said it was a proud moment for his family. “I was expecting to bag a rank among the top 10 students, but I was not expecting the first rank. My parents are feeling proud today and my hard work has paid off,” a report in Hindustan Times quoted him as saying.
Discussing his study strategy, Abhash said that he had joined a Patna-based coaching institute. “I was preparing hard for the Gate exam. After November, I devoted all my time to study,” he added.
On his plans now, Abhash revealed, “I want to prepare for the UPSC exam in future. However, my short-term goal is to get a government job after graduation so that I can support my family financially.”
