Girls Being Imparted Self-Defence Training In Govt Schools: Centre

The training Programme Is Being Provided From Class VI To XII

New Delhi: Girl students in government schools across the country are being imparted self-defence training, the Centre has said.

Minister of Human Resource and Development Ramesh Pokhriyal Nishank informed that Parliament that each school is being provided Rs 3000 every month for the training exercise that covers Judo, Taekwondo and Boxing, among others. “The training aims at developing life skill for self-protection and self-development among the girls,” he said.

Students from class VI to XII including those from Kasturba Gandhi Balika Vidyalayas (KGBVs) are being covered under the initiative, he said, adding inter-house competitions and tournaments are also being conducted at the regional and national levels.

The Minister’s statement comes at a time when the country is witnessing ghastly incidents of sexual abuses against girls and women in several states. According to the National Crime Records Bureau, over 20,000 cases of sexual abuses are registered annually.
