Here’s How IIT-Delhi Partnered AIIMS To Fight COVID
New Delhi: In a joint effort, the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Delhi and the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) New Delhi have launched a telerobotic ultrasound system that allows remote ultrasound access through a robotic arm.
According to a statement from the IIT-Delhi, a research team including professionals from IIT-Delhi, AIIMS, New Delhi, and Addverb Technologies developed the system.
Prof. Chetan Arora and Prof. Subir Kumar Saha led the research team at IIT-Delhi along with Dr Chandrashekhara from AIIMS. Suvayan Nandi was the lead contributor from Addverb Technologies, reported Careers 360.
According to the statement, the doctor stands close to the patients in the normal procedure of ultrasound. However, during the COVID period, it was mandatory to maintain social distance between the doctor and the patient.
Doctors prefer using the “cross-sectional imaging” method during pandemic, and this technique is “more expensive and less dynamic”, said the joint statement from IIT Delhi and AIIMS.
“This requirement came to us from the faculty of AIIMS New Delhi, when the whole nation had been put on lockdown in June 2020, and the number of cases and deaths was rising rapidly. The prevailing situation impacted regular health care services, especially those involving direct physical contact with patients like ultrasound scanning. We wanted to contribute to the safety of healthcare professionals by leveraging our expertise in robotic technology,” IIT-Delhi professors —Chetan Arora and Subir Kumar Saha — were quoted as saying by Careers 360.
