Higher Education Department Asks Odisha Colleges To Settle Land Issues To Receive Grants

Bhubaneswar: The degree colleges and teacher education institutions were asked by the Higher Education department of Odisha on Wednesday to accelerate the settlement process of their campus land with the state government if they want to receive Central grants under RUSA and other schemes.

Going by the records, a total of 51 government colleges and 644 aided colleges have land measuring 180 acres and 1,713 acres, respectively under their occupation. Also, 1,274 high schools are built on government land.

The total valuation of the land occupied by educational institutions worth more than Rs 4,000 crore. The land is, however, not recorded in the institutions’ name owing to various reasons like inability to pay the premium, incidental charges, annual ground rent, cess and encroachment fees with a penalty, reported The New Indian Express.

This absence of land records has deprived several institutions in Odisha of the grants, apart from the NAAC accreditation and grades.

Principal Secretary, Higher Education, Saswat Mishra advised the government and aided non-government degree college principals and teacher education institution heads to engage in talks with the local tehsildars till the process is completed.
