HP University To Replace Black Gowns With Khadi For Convocation
The Himachal Pradesh University (HPU) is going to use Khadi clothes during the 25th convocation of the University, as per the direction of the UGC (University Grants Commission).
The HPU, along with other universities had received a UGC communication a few months ago about the convocation attire, Prof Ranvir Verma, Public Relations Officer (PRO) of HPU told news agency PTI.
A khadi vasket with multi-coloured Himachal cap of Kullu Design and Khadi muffler with the university logo on its both ends will be used in the coming convocation, he said.
These clothes were recommended by a high-powered expert committee and approved by HPU’s executive council in its meeting chaired by Vice Chancellor Prof Sikandar Kumar here on Saturday.
“These clothes will be used temporarily, only for the 25th convocation.” Thereafter, this dress will be reviewed and efforts will be made to make Loyia (hand-woven traditional gown widely used in Sirmour, Solan and Shimla) and HP cap as final clothing for convocation in HPU, the university PRO added.
He further informed that the founder VC of The Himachal University had passed an ordnance to make loyia and HP cap as convocation dress after its establishment on July 22, 1970, but his successors changed it.
Black gowns were worn even during the convocation held in October last year when the President gave away the degrees, he said.
