HYDERABAD: The Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad (IIMA) is all set to implement reservation in PhD admissions from 2025.
“The Government of India guidelines for reservation are followed during admission,” said a clause mentioned in the online applications for doctoral programmes issued by the IIMA.
The online applications opened on September 19 and are accepted until January 20.
The IIMA is inviting applications for the admission to doctoral programme in management, it announced in a post on ‘X’.
Of all 20 IIMs, the IIMA was the only one remaining to implement the reservation. In 2021, Anil Wagde, a Global IIM Alumni Network member, moved the Gujarat High Court, seeking the implementation of reservation in IIMA’s PhD programmes.
The PIL submitted that not giving reservation in the PhD programme in IIMA amounted to “gross violation” of constitutional provisions, the Central Educational Institutions (Reservation in Admission) Act, and the norms of the University Grants Commission (UGC).
In response, the IIMA submitted to the Gujarat High Court in 2023 that it might implement reservation of seats for the candidates belonging to Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes, and Other Backward Classes (OBCs) and physically challenged categories in doctoral programmes in the academic year starting 2025.
“We will wait for further implementation and then we plan to seek details on how many candidates applied and were shortlisted,” media reports quoted Wagde as saying.
