IIT Aspirants Demand Rollback of M.Tech Fee Hike
New Delhi: IIT aspirants on Friday took to the streets here demanding the rollback of the 900 per cent fee hike of the M.Tech programme.
The students, who held protests under the banner of All India Engineering Student Council, told the media that the decision of the IIT Council last week to raise the annual fee from Rs 15000-25000 to Rs 2 lakh per annum was unacceptable as the move has come at a time when there is a lingering job crisis in the country.
Dismissing IIT Council’s contention that the fee hike will keep non-serious candidates out, the students said 50 per cent of the candidates who enrol for the IIT M.Tech programme is serious about the course and their future.
The IIT aspirants have demanded restarting stipend for students at the B.Tech level because most of them complete their course with the help of expensive education loans. This becomes a burden for them and families.
They said the M.Tech fee hike will discourse students from taking admissions in the IITs because they will be under the increased burden of the education loans. These students might be tempted to go for private institutes and universities.
A day after deciding to raise the tuition fee, the IIT Council had issued a statement saying that the move will not impact the existing batch of M.Tech students. The fee hike will be applicable from the next admission season.
