IIT Bombay Not To Hold Final Exams, Students To Be Evaluated Till Mid-Semester
Mumbai: With spiraling cases of COVID-19 in Maharashtra, the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Bombay has decided to do away with the final semester examinations for the 2019-20 academic year.
The institute will also not go ahead with its spring semester which was scheduled from June 1 to July 13.
The decisions were taken a recent meeting of the IIT Bombay senate.
Since many students will be travelling from different states to reach the campus after the restrictions are eased, therefore, it will be difficult for the institution to tackle the unexpected situations with everyone on the campus.
“The current trend of the outbreak in Mumbai and across India makes the return of students to the IIT-B campus in the coming weeks and resumption of the spring semester highly unlikely,” the Indian Express quoted a senate release as saying.
Meanwhile, students will be evaluated based on their performance till mid-semester examination, for which the final grading will be completed by June 30.
Besides, it is at the discretion of the instructors to conduct an additional evaluation online for maximum weightage of 20 per cent, provided all registered students can avail it. The opportunity can be availed by the students who missed the mid-semester examinations, it added.
Also, those students who are not satisfied with their grades will be given a chance to appear for a 100-mark examination, to be conducted in next academic session.
