New Delhi: Helplines have been launched by the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Delhi for its Afghan students and alumni to stand by them at this crisis hour.
IIT-Delhi is “doing everything possible” to help Afghan students return to the campus, tweeted director V Ramgopal Rao.
The institute has 16 students from Afghanistan in the current academic session. Of 16, only one is on the campus currently. The rest 15 had gone back to their homes in Afghanistan during the COVID-19 pandemic and were attending lectures online.
“In this hour of crisis, IIT Delhi stands in solidarity with our students and alumni from Afghanistan. We are doing everything possible to get the students to return to the campus,” Rao wrote on Twitter. “Let’s give them hope #AfghanWomen #Afghanistan #iitdelhi,” he said.

The institute will also encourage Afghan students to apply for the International PhD Fellowship Programme (IPFD) at IIT-Delhi.
A new category of electronic visa has been introduced by the government to fast-track applications from Afghans who wish to leave the Taliban-controlled country.
It may be recalled that IIT-Bombay has allowed its 9 Afghan students who were attending lectures online to stay at the hostel on campus.
