Jaipur: The sixth convocation of the Indian Institute of Technology-Jodhpur was organised in a mixed reality mode, in which 232 students were awarded their degrees on Sunday, December 6, reported Times Now News.
Graduate students from B Tech, M.Sc., M Tech and PhD courses received their degrees in virtual mode, along with students with distinction in academics receiving certificates and medals through their 3D avatars generated by computers.
‘Deep Learning’ technology pioneer and Turing Award (equivalent to Nobel Prize in Computer Science) recipient Professor Geoffrey Hinton was the convocation’s chief guest. Hinton delivered the convocation address virtually, in which he encouraged students to be persistent in achieving their goals.
Professor Hinton also inaugurated the newly established School of Artificial Intelligence and Data Science (AIDE).
Chairman of IIT-Jodhpur’s Board of Governors, Dr R Chidambaram, also addressed the convocation, extending a special welcome to Professor Hinton, and praising Professor Santanu Chaudhury for his efforts in attracting new faculty members, and bright scientists as Young Associates.
Calling the convocation “a special occasion for the Institute, and a defining moment of the lives of 232 students,” he congratulated the parents of students receiving their degrees. He said that the number of graduates from the institute stood at 1,564.
