IITs Face A Big Challenge To Fulfil; More Here
New Delhi: The IITs are having a difficult time implementing the 10 per cent Economically Weaker Section (EWS) quota within the stipulated two year period, seeking a further one-year extension to implement it due to infrastructural bottlenecks.
The Joint Admission Board (JAB) of the IITs, which met last Sunday here, has decided to reach out to the Human Resouce Development Minister to give them one more year to fulfil the mandate.
Indian Express, in a report on Thursday, said that the directors of these prestigious institutes, especially the heads of the older IITs, felt that three years as well might not be enough as the seat strength has to be increased by 25 per cent to accommodate the EWS quota students.
The government has mandated the centrally funded institutes not be tamper with the existing SC, ST and OBC quotas while admitting students under EWS quota. This will require an increase in student intake by 6,708 seats.
“While the IITs have committed to adding about 2,300 seats this year, creating hostel accommodation has emerged as the big challenge right now, the directors acknowledged at the JAB meeting. A letter is expected to be sent to the HRD Minister soon.
“We increased seats last year to introduce a supernumerary quota for girls and now more for EWS quota. We are packed to our full capacity at this moment. One of the older IITs is not in a position to add so many seats even in three years,” one of the IIT directors was quoting as saying.
