Kargil: A team of IIT directors visited here on Monday to assess the feasibility to establish an engineering college in Ladakh district, said the officials.
The team comprising Prof V Ramgopal Rao (IIT-Delhi director), Prof Subhasis Chaudhuri (IIT-Bombay) and Prof Abhay Karandikar (IIT-Kanpur) spoke with officials and students to explore the fellowship opportunities for students of the Union Territory in various IITs also, reported news agency PTI.
While addressing the meeting, Rao said Lieutenant Governor of Ladakh RK Mathur discussed the possibility of setting up an engineering college in Kargil during his recent visit to the IIT-Delhi.
“The purpose of the visit of the team is to know the ground reality about the feasibility for establishment of an engineering college in the district and to assess the students’ interest in the field of engineering,” Professor Rao was quoted as saying by PTI.
Later, the directors also paid a visit to the Government Degree College, Kargil, they were apprised by the vice-principal about the overall functioning and different courses being imparted at the college. According to him, about 2,000 students are presently enrolled in the college while 30 permanent and 23 contractual teaching assistants are registered with the college.
