IITs Set To Boost India’s Defence Capabilities
New Delhi: The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) has reached out to the IITs and NITs to conduct defence-related research which could be put into application.
As per a news report, DRDO has written to some IIT directors to encourage the bright young minds to come up with new ideas for enhancing the nation’s security through technological interventions.
IIT Ropar, for example, has designed helmets for the jawans which can be immensely beneficial in the conduct of the surgical strike. The institute has also developed AI applications for the defence.
Senior DRDO officials will meet the IIT directors and representatives from the Ministry of Human Resource and Development on November 13 to discuss how to build on the initiative and rope in more IITs.
“We just know that we have to present new ideas on research that can be used in defence. I don’t see there is any problem here. We need to come together to develop defence technology that even the world becomes our audience. Our different departments have produced interesting products that have defence application, and will be reviewed in the meeting,” an IIT director was quoted as saying.
A Joint Advanced Technology Centre at IIT Delhi has already been set up with active support of DRDO to fulfil the technological requirements of the armed forces.
Similarly, IIT Madras has a defence-related research facility and is also supporting start-ups for defence needs.
