Karnataka to Introduce Sex Education, Cyber Safety, and Moral Education in Schools

Bengaluru: The Karnataka government will introduce sex education classes for students in grades 8 to 12, along with programs on cyber safety, moral education, and child safety. School Education Minister Madhu Bangarappa announced the initiative on March 19 in the Legislative Council.

The Legislative Council’s initiative aims to introduce sex education for students in grades eight to twelve, helping them understand physiological, emotional, and hormonal changes during adolescence.

As per reports, from the Legislative Council, the minister said the program will be held twice a week by medical professionals, with health check-ups and counselling sessions twice a year. Primary Health Centre staff will also educate students on hygiene, diseases, and drug abuse.

However, along with sex education, the Karnataka government plans to introduce cyber hygiene classes to address digital addiction, early sexual activity, and teen pregnancies. The program will promote safe and responsible use of digital media, though its timeline is yet to be finalised.

Starting next academic year, moral education will be introduced for grades one to ten, focusing on values like integrity, honesty, patience, and respect. Classes will be held twice a week to instil strong ethics in students.

Additionally, the Karnataka government is raising awareness about child safety. Police officials will conduct interactive sessions to educate students on the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, 2012, helping them understand their rights and legal protections against exploitation.

These initiatives aim to address adolescent challenges, including health, digital safety, and personal well-being, fostering responsible behavior and awareness.
