Kerala Becomes First State To Resume Board Exams Amidst Corona Crisis
Thiruvananthapuram: Kerala has become the first state to resume board exams that were suspended due to the coronavirus pandemic.
Around 4.25 lakh Class X students appeared for the exams at 2,945 centres across the state on Tuesday. Similarly, 29,458 examinees attended the vocational higher secondary tests at 389 centres.
On Wednesday, 379,519 students are expected to appear for their exams at 2,032 centres.
Authorities said they have implemented all guidelines like social distancing, thermal screening and use of hand sanitizers at the examination centres. Besides, only 20 examinees are seated in a hall and there are restrictions against students standing in a crowd.
Also, the invigilators are provided with gloves.
“We are not approaching the exams with fear, but with vigil. All students were given masks and pamphlets on COVID-19 guidelines. The students were told to ensure social distancing, right from the time they stepped out of their homes,” Director of Public Instruction Jeevan Babu was quoted as saying by the Indian Express.
“The students who failed to clear thermal screening, were in quarantine or had family members under home quarantine, were allotted special rooms. They were asked not to hand over answer sheets to teachers, but deposit them in special bags. Steps were also taken to ensure minimum contact between students and teachers at schools. The attendance sheets were not passed from one student to another for signing and instead the invigilators took the count. The practice of teachers signing the answer sheets and affixing seals at the end was also done away with,” Babu added.
The schools are arranging transportation for students by using the Parent-Teacher Association (PTA) funds.
