Nagpur: It’s a feat. A few tribal students from the interiors of Maharashtra have cleared the National Eligibility Entrance Test (NEET) 2021 and are likely to soon begin undergraduate degree courses in medicine. These students hail from remote villages of Gadchiroli and Melghat in Maharashtra.
Suraj Pungati (19) from Nagargunda village in Bhamragad taluka of Gadchiroli is one of those who have exceeded his own expectations by scoring 378 out of 720 in NEET 2021.
According to news agency PTI, the student said he will be the first person from the taluka to go to a medical college. The son of a farmer said that there are over 60 families in his village where he is the first one to take up the science stream and is happy that he will now be pursuing medical education.
Suraj lost his mother four years ago and has a younger brother in Class XI. He studied at a school here and scored 92 per cent marks in Class X board exams in 2019. That was the point he decided to be a medical practitioner.
Twenty-one-year-old tribal student, Sawan Shilaskar is another one who achieved a similar feat. The son of a marginal farmer from a small Ghota village in Dahrni taluka of Melghat region in Amaravati district has secured 294 out of 720 in NEET 2021.
With limited opportunities, the sojourn for both was not easy. They were immensely helped by an NGO Lift For Upliftment (LFU) who organized free coaching classes for these students conducted by MBBS students and doctors.
The LFU was founded by students and alumni of the BJ Medical College here. The NGO works for the underprivileged and marginalised students, who cannot afford private coaching, co-founder Dr Ketan Deshmukh was quoted as saying by PTI.
