Machilipatnam Government Medical College Named After Indian Flag Designer Pingali Venkaiah

The institute is among the 10 new medical colleges being built in Andhra Pradesh

HYDERABAD: The Andhra Pradesh government has named the Government Medical College at Machilipatnam after freedom fighter and designer of Indian flag Pingali Venkaiah.

Director of Medical Education D.V.S.L. Narasimham who has been told to take necessary action in this regard, said that the local residents had submitted a representation, seeking the change of name.

The government passed orders through the GO MS no. 123 on October 21. The government order says that taking into consideration the yeoman services rendered by Pingali Venkaiah to the State and country and to fulfil the long-cherished dream of the people of Machilipatnam, the government has named the Government Medical College there after the freedom fighter.

In August, the government issued orders to change the names of 10 new government medical colleges being built at Eluru, Vizianagaram, Rajamahendravaram, Nandyal, Machilipatnam, Markapaur, Madanapalle, Adoni, Pulivendula, and Paderu, to generic names.

The previous YSRCP government had named these colleges after former Chief Minister of undivided Andhra Pradesh Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy.

The present NDA government issued orders that these colleges be called by their generic names.
