NEW DELHI: India has seen a 102% increase in the number of medical colleges and 130% increase in the number of MBBS seats since 2014, the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare has informed Rajya Sabha recently.
The number of medical colleges has gone up to 780 in 2024 from 387 before 2014. Similarly, the number of MBBS seats has increased to 1,18,137 now from 51,348 before 2014, the Ministry said.
Some states and UTs such as Andaman & Nicobar Island, Arunachal Pradesh, Dadra & Nagar Haveli, Mizoram, Nagaland, and Telangana had no medical colleges in 2013-14 academic year. The number of medical colleges in these states and UTs has gone up to 1, except Telangana where 65 medical colleges have been opened till now.
Goa and Chandigarh have retained their single college each but recorded a slight rise in the number of MBBS seats.
The number of medical colleges in Karnataka increased from 46 (2013-14) to 73 (2024-25), followed by Maharashtra where medical colleges have gone up to 80 from 44. Uttar Pradesh has registered a substantial increase from 30 to 86 medical colleges.
The total number of MBBS seats has also seen a rise to 12,425 from 3,749 in Uttar Pradesh. Maharashtra has the MBBS seats increased0 to 11,845from 5,590, while Tamil Nadu added 5,835 seats, reaching 12,050 seats.
Telangana, which had zero medical colleges and MBBS seats earlier, now has 9040 MBBS seats.
Rajasthan also has seen an increase from 10 colleges with 1,750 seats in 2013-14 to 43 colleges with 6,475 seats in 2024-25 academic year.
The colleges have gone up from 12 (1,700 seats) to 31 (5,200 seats) in Madhya Pradesh.
Chhattisgarh registered a rise from five colleges (600 seats) to 16 (2,455 seats), while the colleges in Delhi have increased from seven (900 seats) to 10 (1,497 seats).
