Generating Questions At Last Minute Can Check Paper Leaks, Says Nandan Nilekani

NEW DELHI: Infosys co-founder Nandan Nilekani, who heads the high-powered task force on exam reforms set up by the government after the NEET UG 2026 paper leak, has suggested generating question papers at the last minute from a large question bank to check such incidents.
He also advocated for expansion of computer-based testing across the country.
“Question papers create an economic incentive for them to be sold. So, the way to solve this is to really have a massive bank of questions, and only at the last minute generate the question paper for that day, and therefore the question of ‘a’ question paper goes away, and there’s no economic incentive for that. That’s one way to think about how to solve this,” Nilekani said while speaking at the Bloomberg New Economy Forum.
Answering a question he said artificial intelligence (AI) could generate exam papers even on the day of a test, an ANI report said.
He also suggested expanding the geographical options available to aspirants by using the Computer Based Test (CBT) method, which is already used by the IITs for IIT-JEE.
Stressing the need to move towards CBT for all examinations, he said, “The other thing is, of course, how to make sure all exams are done on a computer-based testing, and that requires a network of locations. We have 150,000 locations where a young boy or girl can take a test. That needs to be expanded.”
The task force, he said, would address such issues.
“I think these are all systemic issues which we will address in our committee. And the Prime Minister is very keen to implement our decisions,” he said.
Following the massive students’ protests at Jantar Mantar after the NTA leak, Prime Minister Narendra Modi had announced a six-member task force headed by Nilekani on exam reforms. Former ISRO Chairman Dr S Somanath, former IB Chief Tapan Deka, IIT Madras Director Prof V Kamakoti, CBSE Chairperson Anita Karwal, and senior bureaucrat Amrit Lal Meena are part of the committee.
