NIT Students To Get Direct Admission For PhD In IITs
Students from the National Institute of Technology (NITs) could soon get direct entry into the IITs in the fourth and final year of their B.Tech programme and take up research work.
A joint declaration in this regard could be made by both the premier engineering institutes soon. They are of the firm belief that the development will enrich the research environment in the country, besides benefitting both of them build their reputation.
Right now, there are 31 NITs in the country and around 16 IITs.
IIT Delhi will start the new policy from 2020-21 academic year.
The new admission process as explained by the director V Ramagopal Rao and reported by The Print is as follows:
- The NIT student will have to clear the interview stage to join the final year in the IIT.
- The student should have a CGPA (cumulative grade point average) of 8 by the end of their third year to be able to sit for the interview.
- Soon after completing the final year, the student can directly take admission in PhD without having to secure a GATE score.
“The idea behind getting NIT students into the IIT is to improve the research culture. We want students who have the potential for research to join our institute. The NITs also get benefitted from this because their students get direct admission in PhD,” IIT Delhi registrar Sandeep Chatterjee was quoted by the Print as saying.
The final year in the IIT will mostly be devoted to project work or completion of six months of the semester period.
