The state government, in November last year, announced the implementation of the NEP in all state-run universities and affiliated colleges from the current academic year.

The Higher Education Department had issued a notification for implementation of the NEP in all undergraduate (UG) courses offered by higher education institutions under the administrative control of the department, beginning 2024-25 academic session.

The implementation of the National Education Policy 2020 is aimed at transforming the higher education landscape to foster multidisciplinary learning, skill development, choice-based credit system, multiple entry-exit and greater flexibility in education, according to the notification.

One of the key reforms brought in by the NEP aims to bring to the school education system is the shifting from the exam-centric 10+2 schooling design to the new 5+3+3+4 pedagogical structure which comprises 12 years of school and 3 years of pre-schooling.

According to the NEP guidelines, school education will be divided into four stages based on age-specific learning —foundational stage for ages 3 to 8, preparatory stage for ages 8 to 11, middle stage for ages 11 to 14, and secondary stage for ages 14 to 18.

Students will learn for five years in the foundational, three years in the preparatory, three years in the middle, and the final four years in the secondary stages.

In Odisha, the new curriculum will first be prepared for the primary level classes in alignment with the NIPUN Odisha Mission which aims to strengthen foundational skills.
