Overseas Education: What Students Should Know About Hidden Forex Costs & Payments

0

For Indian families sending children abroad for higher studies, tuition fees are only the beginning of financial planning. Exchange-rate margins, remittance charges, and everyday spending costs can quietly inflate the overall outgo, often by several lakhs, as payments are made through different channels during a student’s stay overseas.

Exchange Rate: Small Margins, Big Impact

One of the most significant costs is the exchange-rate markup — the difference between the interbank rate and the rate offered to customers. Even a seemingly small variation can have a large impact.

For instance, a 1% difference on a Rs10 lakh remittance equals Rs 10,000, while the same margin on Rs 25 lakh amounts to Rs 25,000.

“On a large tuition payment, even a small difference can translate into thousands of rupees,” said Gagan Malhotra, COO of BookMyForex, an online marketplace for foreign exchange and international transfers.

Apart from the exchange rate, families must also factor in transfer or processing fees, SWIFT charges, and intermediary-bank costs. Sai Shankar, CBO of Niyo Forex, a fintech platform offering international travel cards and digital banking services, advised families to compare the landed cost of a transaction — the total rupee amount paid versus the foreign currency received — rather than focusing only on the exchange rate or transfer fee.

Tuition vs. Living Expenses

The costs vary depending on whether the payment is for tuition or everyday living.

Tuition payments: Families should compare exchange-rate markup, transfer charges, intermediary-bank costs, processing time, and documentation requirements.

Living expenses: Students must consider forex card charges, ATM withdrawal fees, reload costs, and cross-currency charges.

Malhotra noted that ATM withdrawal, reload, and unload charges can add up significantly over time. Shankar added that students using cards should separately examine forex markup, ATM charges, and other card-related fees instead of relying solely on the headline forex rate.

Loans & Payments: Separate Calculations

Education loans and forex payments are distinct considerations. Loans determine how studies are financed, while banks or remittance platforms determine how money is converted and spent abroad.

Families should examine loan interest rates, processing fees, repayment terms, and disbursement conditions separately from forex costs. Disbursement terms are particularly important, as some lenders specify how tuition or overseas expenses must be routed.

Shankar cautioned that students should check the exchange rate and charges applicable when lenders disburse funds, since these costs form part of the overall expense. Malhotra added that families should assess loans beyond interest rates and consider the costs of converting, transferring, and using funds abroad.

Beware of ‘Zero Fee’ Claims

Students may encounter products advertising zero transfer fees or zero forex markup. But these features only address specific charges and should not be mistaken for lower overall costs.

For example, a card with zero forex markup may still levy ATM withdrawal fees, while a remittance service with no upfront transfer fee may offer a less favorable exchange rate.

“The simplest comparison,” Shankar said, “is to ask how many rupees will be paid and exactly how much foreign currency the university or student will receive.”

Five Practical Tips to Cut Forex Costs

  1. Compare providers — Don’t rely on your regular bank alone; fintech platforms and forex marketplaces may offer better rates.
  2. Calculate the effective rate — Divide the rupee amount paid by the foreign currency received to see the true cost.
  3. Plan large payments in advance — Lock in favorable rates or use scheduled transfers to avoid sudden spikes.
  4. Use forex cards wisely — Limit ATM withdrawals, check reload fees, and avoid unnecessary cross-currency transactions.
  5. Check loan disbursement terms — Ensure your lender’s conversion and transfer charges don’t erode the benefit of a low interest rate.
