President Asks Institute Heads To Fill Teaching Posts Without Delay

He Also Suggested The Institutes To Create Alumni Endowment Funds

New Delhi: President Ramnath Kovind on Saturday asked the central universities and other institutes of national importance to fill up vacancies at the earliest and support innovation and entrepreneurship among students.

He was addressing a conference of the heads of these institutes where a presentation was made about the vacant faculty positions across central institutes in the country. While the central universities are currently holding a massive recruitment drive to fill about 10,000 vacancies, the President’s assertion on this aspect presumably highlights that the universities are still to cover lot of grounds to finish the hiring drive on time.

The UGC has asked universities across the country in a communication in October to complete the process soon and intimate it of the progress made by November.

“It is imperative to fill up vacancies. Wherever posts are yet to be created, it has to be done at the earliest. Infrastructure projects need to be completed; innovation and entrepreneurship needs to be supported,” he said.

The President suggested that like IIT Delhi, which has created an alumni endowment fund, other institutes should also develop similar plans. “I hope to hear from more of you when we meet next year on your initiatives,” Kovind said.

The conference was attended by 46 Heads of Central Universities/Institutes of Higher Learning in the fields of agriculture, pharmaceuticals, aviation, design, footwear-design, fashion, petroleum and energy, maritime studies, planning and architecture and information technology.

During the conference, different sub groups comprising heads of various institutes made presentations on issues such as promotion of research; promotion of innovation and entrepreneurship among students; building industry-academia linkages; filling up of vacancies including faculty from foreign universities; creating alumni funding and enhancing alumni activities; completion of major infrastructure projects in a time-bound manner.
