Prof V K Tewari Named New IIT Kharagpur Director

Kharagpur: V K Tewari, a senior professor of Agriculture and Food Engineering at IIT-Kharagpur, has been named as the new Director of the institute.

According to media reports, President Ramnath Kovind has given his consent to his candidature on Monday. No formal announcement has, however, been made by the Ministry of Human Resource and Development. Tewari replaces Partha Pratim Chakraborty who had retired on July 31 last year. Prof Sriram Kumar Bhattacharyya was in charge of the post temporarily.

Tewari will helm the institute, the oldest among all the IITs and considered one of the finest among its peers globally.

Indian Express in a report on Wednesday said a three-member panel had shortlisted the probable candidates and had submitted its report to the Ministry in October last year. HRD Minister Ramesh Pokhriyal Nishank had finally recommended Prof Tewari’s name to the President.

Significantly, Tewari’s appointment came on a day when he was set to retire on attaining the age of 65. He is reported to be the seniormost professor in IIT Kharagpur.
