Puducherry: School & College Reopening Postponed After 16 Children Test COVID Positive

Puducherry: A total of 16 children tested COVID-19 positive here in a week’s time prompting the Puducherry government to postpone its decision to reopen schools for classes IX to XII. The schools for senior students and colleges were scheduled to resume on Friday, July 16.

Home minister A Namassivayam said that the government reconsidered its decision to reopen schools and colleges following requests from different sections. Namassivayam also holds the portfolio of education.

According to Namassivayam, the decision to defer school and college reopening was made following discussions with chief minister N Rangasamy and the territorial administration officials.

Sixteen children, who tested COVID-19 positive, are undergoing treatment at Indira Gandhi Medical College and Research Institute (IGMCRI) in the Union Territory of Puducherry.

Among the infected ones, 12 are aged between one and five years while four of them are above five years.
