Ratan Tata’s Vision For Education: The Tata Group’s Contributions To Learning In India

Mumbai: Ratan Tata, former chairman of the Tata Group, passed away on the night of October 9 at the age of 86 at Mumbai’s Breach Candy Hospital. Under his leadership, the Tata Group achieved numerous milestones, not only in business but also in the education sector, establishing several prominent institutions across India.

The Tata Group has long been dedicated to education, founding numerous schools and colleges. Besides these institutions, the group operates NGOs in collaboration with state and central governments to provide education to economically disadvantaged students. They also offer scholarships and fellowships annually for students in grades 6 to 12.

In 1892, Jamshed Tata established the Tata Endowment with the aim of promoting education for girls. One of the earliest schools founded under this initiative is the Bai Nawazbai Tata Girls School in Navsari, Gujarat, which has been in operation for over 160 years. According to the Tata Group’s website, this institution is among the first schools in India specifically for girls. Additionally, the Tata Group manages several other schools, including the Global Mission School, Global Mission International School, Lakshman Gyanpeeth School, and Shishu Mandir.

The institute offers graduate courses and Doctor of Philosophy programs, with admission to postgraduate programs based on an entrance examination.

The Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS) was established in 1936 by Sir Dorabji Tata. Initially named the Sir Dorabji Tata Graduate School of Social Work, it was renamed TISS in 1944.
