New Delhi: The Health and Family Welfare Ministry is examining a proposal under which postgraduate medical students will have to serve three months in a district hospital to sit for the final exams.
The Board of Governors (BoG), vested with the powers of the Medical Council of India has recommended the Ministry to draft the guidelines in consultation with the state governments.
It has further suggested that the provision be implemented from the next academic session, news agency PTI said in a report.
“The move is aimed at providing practical experience to future specialists in the real-life setting of the country’s public health system. This will also help address the shortage of specialist doctors in district hospitals of rural and remote areas, and help strengthen services at such hospitals,” a senior government official was quoted as saying.
The BoG has recommended that the PG students should be engaged with the district hospitals on a rotation basis and this should be made an integral component of the course curriculum.
