School Enrolment In India Slipped By 3.3 Million In 10 Years, Says Report

New Delhi: India’s school enrolment saw a steady decline over the last decade. As many as 3.3 million fewer children enrolled in schools in 2019-20 than a decade ago.

In 2021-13 when the unified district information system for education (UDISE) was initiated, the school-goer population was 254.8 million, in contrast to 250 million in 2019-20.

“Overall enrolment has been falling at all levels for almost a decade, whether primary, elementary or overall I to XII enrolment. The decline in enrolment is much higher than the decline in child population,” author of the research paper, “Is decline in school enrolment in India a cause of concern?… Yes, it is,” and former NIEPA professor, Arun Mehta was quoted as saying by The Times of India.

“Instead of trying to explain the steady slide, the government has announced improvement by citing the 2018-19 enrolment data which is the lowest enrolment fell to in a decade,” Mehta mentioned one of the problem points.

The highest enrolment in the last decade was in 2015-16, when the school-going population was 260.6 million, while the lowest was 248.3 million recorded in 2018-19.
